POTENTIAL STATUS OF PERSIMMON (DIOSPYROS KAKI L.) IN AZERBAIJAN

Abstract
Abstract. Persimmon (Diospyros kaki) is a significant subtropical fruit crop extensively cultivated in Diospyros kaki (Oriental persimmon) is extensively cultivated in Azerbaijan, particularly in the Balakan, Zagatala, Sheki, and Gakh regions. Meanwhile, the native Diospyros lotus (Caucasian persimmon) thrives at elevations of 700–1200 m, predominantly in humid microhabitats near riverbanks, shaded slopes, and human settlements. As a subtropical crop, persimmon cultivation demands specific climatic and edaphic conditions. The establishment of the Balkhoorma processing facility in 2017 has significantly enhanced the persimmon industry, facilitating large-scale drying and export, primarily to Russia and European markets. Owing to its high sugar content, persimmon serves as a key raw material for dried fruit products, molasses, and bakery applications. Additionally, its bioactive compounds contribute to its pharmaceutical and nutraceutical significance. This study underscores Azerbaijan’s growing role in global persimmon production, the economic impact of its export sector, and the necessity of adopting sustainable cultivation and post-harvest technologies to optimize fruit quality and market value.
