ABSTRACT
This article presents the results of botanical, systematic, floristic, and geobotanical studies carried out along
the Caspian coast of the Nabran settlement, Khachmaz district, from 20 to 27 August 2023. In addition, the
ethnobotanical characteristics and phytocoenological analysis of the useful plant resources, together with
the current state of the species in nature, were investigated. On the basis of the geobotanical research, the
current state of the natural phytocoenoses in which the species occur was evaluated, the genera and species
were arranged into taxonomic units, the distribution ranges of certain species were clarified, and digital
photographs were taken. A taxonomic composition of 104 species belonging to 72 genera and 38 families
was determined from the collected herbarium specimens.
The biomorphological analysis indicates that the flora is dominated by perennial and annual herbs (each
accounting for 40.4%). The remaining life forms are distributed as follows: trees (5.8%), lianas (2.8%), biennials
(2.8%), subshrubs (2.8%), tree-shrubs (1.9%), undershrubs (1.9%), and shrubs (1.0%). Most of the plants occurring
in the area possess medicinal, essential-oil, tannin, food, dyeing, and other useful properties.
During the ethnobotanical surveys, valuable data on a number of useful plants used by the local population were
obtained. Notably, Alnus glutinosa was recorded for the first time for the dendroflora of Azerbaijan, and a new
locality of Samolus valerandi L. (family Primulaceae Batsch ex Borkh.) was identified in the coastal area of Shimali
village. Finally, methods for the conservation and sustainable use of the Caspian coastal flora and vegetation are
proposed.
